(1) Strong adaptability to the shape and size of castings. It can produce blanks of various shapes and sizes, especially suitable for manufacturing parts with complex internal cavities.
(2) Strong adaptability to materials. It can adapt to the forming of most metal materials, and casting has unique advantages for materials that are not suitable for forging and welding.
(3) Low casting cost. This is because the source of casting raw materials is abundant, and the shape of the casting is close to that of the part, which can reduce the amount of cutting and thus lower the casting cost.
Therefore, casting is one of the most important methods for raw material production, such as using castings for 60% to 80% of machine tools and 50% to 60% of automobiles by weight. However, due to the multiple stages of the casting process, various casting defects are prone to occur, and the grain size of general castings is coarse, resulting in inferior mechanical properties compared to forgings. Therefore, castings are generally not suitable for making important parts with complex and high stress, and are mainly used for parts with low stress or simple static loads (especially suitable for compressive stress), such as boxes, bed frames, brackets, machine bases, etc.
